Zantac, otherwise known as ranitidine, reduces the production of stomach acid. It was intended to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers. It was also effective in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, heartburn, and acid indigestion.
However, this popular heartburn over-the-counter drug Zantac has recently been reported to contain elevated levels of a chemical that could cause cancer. The levels of the chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a known carcinogenic (cancer causing substance) found in this drug, have been tested to be anywhere from 3,000 to 26,000 times higher than the legal limit set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Back on November 12, 2019, the FDA had advised companies to recall their ranitidine products (Zantac) due to testing that showed high levels of NDMA significantly higher than the acceptable daily intake (96 nanograms per day or 0.32 parts per million for ranitidine). Then, on April 1, 2020, the FDA realizing the deadly nature of ranitidine (Zantac), requested the removal of Zantac from the market. Thereafter, due to this FDA warning, in conjunction with pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens pulling Zantac off their shelves, ranitidine (Zantac) products are no longer available for sale in the United States.
